Agents
  • There are agents for general managers, coaches and players. If a player agent represented a coach as a client, it would be a conflict of interest.
  • Agents for players must be certified by the NHLPA.
  • Properly sized and constructed mouth guards can minimize, if not prevent injuries such as lacerations to the mouth, injuries to jaw joints and damage to teeth. Along with proper helmets, mouth guards are a significant defense mechanism against concussions.
  • Equipment sizing affects skill development and playing ability.
  • For officials, the only mandatory equipment is a black helmet, ½ visor, black and white striped jersey, black pants and of course, skates and a whistle!
  • The machine that resurfaces the ice is officially called the Zamboni. It was invented by Frank Zamboni in 1949. It scrapes the snow off the ice and lays down a fresh coat of hot water. Did you also know that Frank was a rink operator in the state of California?

Hockey

  • Hockey Canada registered 4.5 million people as being involved in minor hockey in 2002-2003 of which 500,000 were players. The rest included coaches, officials, administrators, managers and some volunteers. It did NOT include parents, fans and most volunteers.
  • USA Hockey registered approximately 500,000 players, coaches, officials, administrators and managers in 2002-2003.
  • Weight for weight, bone is at least 5 times as strong as steel. 1000 Facts - p. 24
  • Bones are so strong that they can cope with twice the squeezing pressure that granite can or 4 times the stretching tension that concrete can. 1000 Facts - p. 24
  • Bones are so light that they only make up 14% of your body's total weight, so if you weigh 100 pounds, 14 are those are your bones. 1000 Facts - p. 24
  • If all the muscles in your body pulled together, they could lift a bus. 1000 Facts - p. 41
  • A normal breath takes in about 0.4 litres of air. A deep breath can take in 10 times as much. 1000 Facts - p. 49

Thus the importance of taking a deep breath when we feel nervous or anxious before a game!

Management

  • As Manager of a minor hockey team, you are responsible and accountable for ensuring the successful achievement of a number of vital objectives. For example:
    • Signing and registration of all players within the rules of your association and league.
    • Provision of properly sized game and practice uniforms to all players.
    • Scheduling of all on and off ice activities in accordance with the decisions of the coaching staff.
    • Ensuring that all participants arrive at the right place and the right time for all team functions.
    • Development and administration of an appropriate team budget.
    • Identification of funding sources and collection of revenue.
    • Payment of all bills and issuance of all receipts related to operational costs.
    • Development of overall fundraising strategy.
    • Ensuring all formal communication by the team is accurate and professional.
    • Development and implementation of all relevant policy and rules for team operation.
    • Ensuring that player safety and enjoyment is a key focus in all activity.
    • Ensuring registration in all tournaments as decided upon by the team and then making sure everyone gets there, has a good time and gets home.
    • Communication! Communication! Communication!
  • The Team Management System can help you get organized and provide effective strategies for managing your team simply and efficiently.
  • Some fast food restaurants offer healthy choices, such as salads, vegetable soups and wraps.
  • Water is the most important substance needed for the body. The amount of water in your brain is approximately 85%. The water content for the rest of your body is about 75%. You must drink a satisfactory amount of water each day depending on your size, how active you are and where you live.
  • The fitter you are, the quicker your body returns to normal after exercise. 1000 Facts - p. 206 Or after a hockey game!
  • For 85% of the time, the game of hockey is played in the anaerobic training system. The other 15% is played in the aerobic training system.

Rules

  • Did you know that when a defenseman or forward breaks a stick he must immediately drop the stick? If he continues to play with the broken stick he will get a 2 minute minor penalty. Yet a goaltender is allowed to continue playing with a broken stick until there is a whistle and stoppage in play, without suffering a penalty.

Statistics

  • When a puck hits the crossbar or the goalpost, it does not count as a shot on net. Also, if the goalie catches the puck outside the boundaries of the net it is not counted as a shot on net.
Stick Grips

There are 4 types of stick grips

  • Cloth tape is what players have used for years to make a hockey stick grip.
  • Cohesive tape is very similar to medical tape and it has a nice “squishy” feel.
  • Grip Foam is one of the newest additions to help a player make a soft comfortable custom foam hockey stick grip.
  • The newest grips to hit the market are composite hockey stick grips.  They fit into hollow composite sticks only and are shaped to fit your hand better than a rectangular stick.  They have  a “shaved” grip feel and provide excellent glove wear.  The soft rubber outer of the grips give players a firm and secure feeling.  (Check out www.oggiegrip.com for more details)
