Volunteer gets roped into managing hockey team but gets untangled with TMS

Minor hockey coaches and managers do not coach and manage for the love of the paperwork. It is the love of the game that keeps these dedicated volunteers going. On average, for every 1 hour of practicing in the rink, 2 hours are spent sitting behind a desk or at a kitchen table focusing on seemingly endless paperwork, meetings; and, of course, the inevitable and vital fundraising.

The reality for most minor hockey teams is that if there is no fundraising, there are enormous cheques to be written by parents, and certainly no extras like new equipment or trips, unless parents pay.  The Team Management System (TMS) is designed to teach coaches, managers and volunteers about strategic planning and maximizing efforts.

“The better communication made my life a lot less stressful,” states Anna Lupo, a hockey mom that lived a season of the Team Management System. “And due to the better fundraising efforts, at the end of our season we saw 30% of the registration fees go back to the parents.”

By simplifying everyone’s role, creating clear communication channels, and saving time,  everyone involved can focus on what’s really important, the game. The purpose of The Hockey Source is to better the game by bettering the people.

“Outside of my regular full-time day job, it was another 30-hour a week job for me to administer a team. The coach and I were responsible for everything from the budget to the travel itinerary,” states The Hockey Source spokesperson, Jack Ray.  “In minor hockey today many people are roped into doing some of these tasks, but because they have no idea where to begin, they quickly become overwhelmed. The purpose of TMS is to give team managers a step by step advantage while putting back the fun.”

And because no two teams are exactly alike, The Hockey Source will personalize each system with the team’s name, colors and logo as well as provide a free consultation with one of its specialists.  The program is tailored to fit every team’s individual needs allowing them to better plan, manage, and execute a great off the ice game plan.

****THE INSPIRATIONAL CORNER  *****
-----------------------------------------------------------

Michael Jordan was CUT from his high school basketball team.  At the age of 15, he attended Wilmington’s Laney High School where he failed to make the varsity basketball team the first year he tried out.  The following summer, Michael Jordan worked diligently on his own and attended basketball camps to improve his game.

Just because you were unsuccessful the first time does not mean that you will be unsuccessful the second or third time too.  Change your approach!  Look at your plan!  Do you even have a plan?  What is your overall objective?  Make sure you know what you are going after and have a plan on how you will get it.  Identify those who can help you and then ASK, ASK, ASK for help.  Success in hockey comes from a team approach.  Take action.  Do something.  Taking action is better than sitting around and hoping things will change.

****ABOUT THE SOURCE  *****
----------------------------------------------

The Hockey Source and Mullins Sports alongside contest sponsor, The Hockey News magazine are inviting people of all ages and interests to enter their “Design-A-Jersey” Contest.  The Hockey News is an icon in hockey when it comes to providing information about the game and the vision of The Hockey Source is to be the ultimate source of information for people involved and interested in minor hockey.

Rules and instructions about the contest are clearly outlined on The Hockey Source website www.thehockeysource.tv .  The deadline for entries is December 15, 2004.  A panel of judges will review all submissions and make a final decision so that the winner can be contacted and an announcement made in late December.  The winning jersey design will be worn by the players from different communities who will appear on the weekly TV show.  “It is only fitting to allow those interested in minor hockey to help us create the look for our ‘On-Ice’ television segments”, says Kevin Huhn, Executive Producer of The Hockey Source.  “Having the Hockey News sponsor this contest allows us to fulfill our purpose of bettering the game by bettering the people.”

Also in December 2004, The Hockey Source will be featured at the Hockey Country Tradeshow in Ottawa, Ontario which runs alongside the Bell Capitol Cup Hockey Tournament.  “This is the largest Tournament of its kind in the world.” Says Cyril Leeder, COO, Ottawa Senators Hockey Club.  The Hockey Country Tradeshow will be held on December 30th and 31st in the Bell Sensplex.  The Hockey Source is the sponsor of the new “Centre Stage” attraction as well as managing two information and communication booths.

****FACE-OFF:  CHECKING!  IN or OUT? *****
-------------------------------------------------------------------

For years there have been those who believe that body checking should be banned from the game for the young players.  There are others who strongly defend the basis of the game, which is being able to crash and bang for the puck.

Are there more injuries due to body checking or is it a perception that media has created by sharing one story in so many different ways?  The simple fact is that body checking has always been a part of the game.  Consider this.  Only one team can have the puck at any one time while on the ice.  More specifically, only one player can have possession of it at one time.  What the other team does is defend against the puck carrier either by protecting an area or by staying close to the puck carrier; in other words, checking where he or she goes.

Perhaps it is not checking that is the concern but rather the physical hitting that creates the passion about this topic.  Specifically, how hard the hit is and where it occurs relative to both the ice surface and the player are the two ingredients that feed this controversial subject.  The governing bodies of hockey have done a good job to ensure fair play and safety by enforcing infractions to those who do not apply body contact fairly.  But they have been inconsistent in deciding the age level at which body contact should and should not be conducted.

The designers of the game never intended for two teams to brutally beat each other up.  Nor did they envision the game to be a gracious skate with a tap of a stick on an object to score a point.  The game of hockey is about outscoring the opponent.  This is done with excitement and emotion amongst those playing.  Playing the game to hurt the opponent is not acceptable and is no fun to play or watch.  However, using physical strength to gain possession of the puck or control the puck is sometimes mistaken for aggressive play.  This is where it gets to be a little fuzzy.

Key questions to think about:

  • Should contact be allowed with clearly defined infractions?
  • Should contact be allowed only at certain ages or certain levels?
  • How does allowing or disallowing contact change the game?

Throughout the season, The Hockey Source will continue to review this subject with a view to uncovering the myths and providing the facts about what would be best for the game.  The Hockey Source wants your feedback.  If you have an opinion on this topic, please submit it to info@thehockeysource.tv.

****DID YOU KNOW?  *****
----------------------------------------

Are you finding that people don’t understand what you are trying to say?  Or are you struggling in your attempts to achieve your goals?  Then you need to adopt this approach to your planning.  You need to get to the P.O.I.N.T.!   Plan, Organize, Implement, Nurture and Track it.

By adapting the POINT technology in all you do, you increase your chances of getting what it is you are after.  Whether you are a coach, parent, player, official or manager, you can achieve your goals and objectives by getting to the POINT.

Here’s how:

Plan - Write down in any order, what it is you want to achieve, obtain or do.  Remember to be specific.  State what you want and by when.

Organize - Take your list and put your items in a chronological order.  Identify who you need to see and what you need to do for each item.  You might consider using a table form to keep all your thoughts organized.

Implement - Take action.  A wise father once told his son: “plan your work and work your plan.”

Nurture - Offer encouragement. This step is like planting a seed.  You do not put it in the earth and hope it grows.  You add water, proper sunlight and provide warmth. You must help grow what you implemented.

Track it! - The only way to know how you are doing in comparison to what you wanted to do is to write things down.  Are you achieving what you said you wanted?  If not, are there adjustments to be made?

Be in control.  Get what you want.  Get to the POINT!
